Club History

The Rossmoyne Amateur Football Club (The Rhinos) was formed in 1996 by a number of talented local players wanting to combine their athletic ability with the social benefits and passion of grassroots football. This group (based at our current location: Shelley Reserve, Koolan Drive, Shelley) achieved premierships in each of their first three seasons, progressing to the B Grade of the amateur competition. Falling a victim to their own success, the club lost a number of star players to country leagues and other teams across Perth from 2004 onwards. After dropping back to one team, the club undertook an extensive rebuilding process. This rebuilding era culminated in the club breaking a 15 year premiership drought in 2013, taking out the E1 grade premiership in the WAAFL. Following the on-field success of 2013, the club was able to nominate 2 senior sides in the 2014 season and rise to the C4 grade of the WAAFL. This growth continued in 2015, 2016 and 2017 with the league team making the finals in 2017. This growth has seen an increase in player numbers (particularly those under the age of 26) resulting in both senior sides having strong years on the field. 2018 saw the introduction of the first ever Womens team at Rhinoland, with the club fielding a team in the inaugural year of the newly introduced competition. That year saw our women have an amazing season and reach the Grand Final, which was a great achievement. We have gone from strength to strength and we now field 2 Womens teams, one in the A Grade and one in the C4 competition. For the last 10 years Rossmoyne has fielded a mens team in the Super (35+) Division of the WA AFL Masters Competition. This allows players that have played at Rossmoyne since juniors to continue to play at the club until they are well into their 50s. The sustained growth of the club is expected to continue through 2022 and beyond, leading to the club having an increased profile within the wider community. The ability of the club to attract young, talented and hard-working footballers combined with the energy and enthusiasm of the committee makes for exciting times to be involved with the Rossmoyne Rhinos.
